Beautiful photography, memorable “stills”

5

4

Preferred this to The Great Beauty.  Pretentious yet somehow griping, sad and funny.  Multi-faceted

3

4

Great scenery.  Interesting use of music.  Sad underlying theme

3

4

I liked the surreal atmosphere

3

3

Some wonderful moments and sequences but needed a ruthless editor to shorten it

3

3

Ugly people, missed several opportunities, futile lust.  Plus ça change

3

2

Perhaps it would have sounded better in Italian?

2

2

A terribly sad view of old age.  The only bit I enjoyed was the mountain scenery

2

2

Good soundtrack!

2

1

Self indulgent, mostly I was bored

A remarkable, visceral film.  No seatbelts!

5

5

Very slow start, limited dialogue, amazing camera angle shot, very convincing acting

5

5

Gripping!

5

5

Very good choice, well made.  Is this cinema verité?  Very unexpected – total audience concentration.  Surprisingly real.

4

4

Gripping throughout

4

4

Technically brilliant.  Gripping, although clear from the start it would end in disaster

4

4

Great acting.  Slow boiler – but worth the wait!

4

4

Life, like this film, is shot in one single extraordinary take – but without an action dénouement.  Although 2  hours 18 minutes seemed a life time!

4

2

Sad.  What did she do next?  Great acting.  Maybe they should have done accountancy.

3

2

Depends what is meant by quality – it was a stunning technical feat, quite well acted but with excruciatingly uninteresting monosyllabic repetitive dialogue  (made up on the hoof perhaps??).  I didn’t ultimately care what happened to any of them.

2

1

Bored after 45 minutes and it never got better.  Too too long!

1

I was bored stiff

And the moral is…. don’t lock up your daughters

4

4

How many other girls?

4

4

But what happened next?

4

4

Good but not outstanding

4

3

Intriguing.  Look forward to the discussion to talk it through

4

2

Watchable, but nothing new

3

4

Better than the synopsis, music a bit repetitive

3

3

The film would have been better if shorter

3

2

Could be worse – under Erdogan they’ll all be wearing hijabs

3

1

Its horrible to think that girls could be treated like that today – if they are I hope this film helps to change things

An enchanting, compassionate and magical film.  A nice change from the cynical norm.

5

5

Life affirming, quirky and visually sumptuous.  Best Japanese film since “Departures”.  Unrealistic, but fates can be.

5

5

Such a sweet gentle film.

5

5

Charming and heartfelt.

5

5

A film about food and families (??) and fun.

5

5

Almost faultless.

5

5

Magical.  Another world.

5

4

Beautifully Understated.

4

5

Charming, tender and enjoyable.  Good to see a film about human lives and about women, family and friendship.  Nice scenes of pretty parts of Japan too.

4

4

Plum wine without the alcohol.

4

4

All those smiles were infectious – I wanted to live in that house and drink plum wine with them.

3

3

Bit too smiley for me – too much eating!

3

3

A vitamin boost for the soul?  Come of it!  It was like swimming in warm custard.

For a savage satire of a present dictatorship look West rather than East
